They Say it's MY Birthday....dadadadadah
Once again I am writing today about the previous day. :-) Yes indeed it was my 21st birthday, again! Crazy how that works. ;-) No, really, it was my 28th birthday. YIKES!!! That's pretty darn close to 30! What a wonderful birthday celebration I had, being in NYC.
First things first. I had to get my morning breakfast cupcake from Magnolia bakery!! Haha!! It was delicious, as I knew it would be. They even sold candles and cupcake toppers for birthdays, so Emily bought one of each and we found a smoker with some matches to light the candle. It was a fun, quick birthday morning celebration. :-)
Next, we headed to the #1 subway and went all the way to the last stop 'South Ferry'. This is where we checked in for the Statue of Liberty cruise and climb into her crown. It sure was a good thing that we bought our tickets a few months ago, because they were sold out for the day - AND the wait in line just to get to the island was going on 3 hours. WOAH, baby! We went to the 'reserved' line and pretty much got right through security and onto the boat. Off we went to see our Lady Liberty! On the island, we checked in for the crown access wrist bands, and headed over to the museum store where we had to place all of our belongings into a locker. This was really cool. The locking mechanism for the locker was a fingerprint scanner. SO Cool!
We proceeded to the park ranger outside and headed into the statue's base. Once inside we had to wait about 10 minutes, and then we were off. Climbing the stairs all of the way up to the crown!! It's something like 354 steps to the top, and the staircase becomes spiral and tight as you get closer to the top. It was a lot of fun. Darek made it in 6 minutes, and I took 9 minutes. I had to take a little break part of the way up... :-) On the way down it only took 2 minutes. Funny. We had fun looking out at the city and all of the sights from the crown windows. It's a small space up there and a bit crampy, so we didn't stay long. Oh, and it was HOT. Ugh! We had fun taking pictures, though. Great experience to check off the list.
Next on the agenda - Ellis Island. This was pretty cool. Darek found his great grandfather's name Hermann Schwarz from Germany. We took an hour tour of the main building and learned about the immigrants and their journey through Ellis Island. Very interesting!!
We departed and took the train back to our hotel to get changed and ready for Mary Poppins. FUN! This was an amazing show!! It was so well done!! The acting, sets and flying people were amazing!!!!!! I must say that I loved it!! After the show, we jetted outta there so we could catch the subway to Rockefeller Center. One more trip to Magnolia Bakery for an evening birthday cupcake. I guess we just couldn't get enough of these cupcakes, cake, and Banana Pudding! (I know we ate really healthy here). :-) We took our desserts to go and headed back to the subway to catch a ride to Carnegie Deli.
Carnegie Deli has HUGE sandwiches! Meat, Meat, Meat!!! WOW! We shared our sandwiches and it was a delicious supper. We even had company at our table... a nice lady from San Francisco - originally from London - in NYC for a little break after her grad school semester ended. She was quite interesting and we had a great conversation.
This was our last stop before we headed back to Times Square to buy some souvenirs and then to the hotel to get some shut eye. Jeepers - I was T-I-R-E-D by this point. Good night!
*A few side notes - Our hotel was next to an office building and we had a great view of our neighbor 'two-screens'. We lovingly named him that because he had two computer screens. We got to know his children (through the pictures on his desk) over the weekend. ;)
We became experts at the subway system... Haha!
There was an Elmo in costume at our street corner every night... random
The garbage gets stacked out on the city street for the garbage men to come throw in the back of the truck... And our city trash people think they have it rough... jeez!
We had to get the hot water knob replaced in our hotel shower after the first day because it was leaking water out and all over the floor. :-)
Ok - that's all for now! Pshew, I'm outta breath!
